For six years Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been presenting their haute coutureDolce & GabbanaAlta Moda and Alta Sartoria collections in hidden corners of Italy and far-flung spots around the world, fromCapriandSicilyto London and Tokyo. New Yorkers and other North Americans who have the clout and the bank accounts to attend have always had to fly in for the occasions, which they do gladly: Signori Dolce and Gabbana know how to throw a party.
Next weekend, after many requests, the designers are finally bringing their Alta collections to the Big Apple. The four-night affair will encompass presentations for the duos Alta Gioielleria high jewelry line at the Public Library and mens and womens made-to-measure offerings at the Rainbow Room and the Metropolitan Opera, respectively, as well as a closing night bash at the Top of the Standard. Throughout it all, private buying appointments will be held at The St. Regis hotel; the company has taken over an entire floor.

According to Gabbana, It all started with an invitation from the Metropolitan Opera, one of our favorite theaters. Not that they needed all that much convincing about coming to New York. He continued: We love everything about the city, the food, the people you meet on the streets, the skyscrapers, the restaurants, the subway, the nightlife, the lights that never go out. I could go on forever. . . . Dolce finished the thought: To us, New York is the city where dreams come true.
At previous Alta shows, the setting very much informed the clothes. Last summer in Palermo, Sicily, the duo wove details from the Visconti filmThe Leopard, which was set on the island, into the hem of a gown, and incorporated Sicilian folklore and tourist souvenirs into much else. Gabbana confirmed that next weeks Alta Moda an Alta Sartoria collections will similarly evoke New York. With its skyline and its energy, the city is definitely our inspiration. And it wont just be locals in the crowd. Dolce & Gabbana have guests jetting in from China, Russia, the Middle East, and the U.K.
